What is parenting therapy or parenting support?

Parenting therapy is a collaborative, nonjudgmental process that helps you better understand your child/teen/or adult child’s behavior, strengthen your relationship, and build practical strategies that work in real-life situations. It’s not about being a “perfect parent”—it’s about finding what works for your unique child and family.

Who is parenting therapy for?

We work with parents, co-parents, step-parents, caregivers, and guardians who want support navigating behavioral, emotional, or developmental challenges and strengthening their connection with their child (of all ages).

What kinds of challenges can parenting therapy help with?

Parenting therapy can help with concerns such as emotional outbursts, defiance, anxiety, transitions (like divorce or school changes), sibling conflict, co-parenting challenges, navigating developmental changes from hugs to independence, and supporting children (of all ages) with ADHD, autism, or trauma-related needs.

Do I need to bring my child to sessions?

Not always. Many sessions are focused on working directly with parents. In some cases, children may be included when it supports observation, skill-building, or improving family interactions.

What if my child won’t participate in therapy?

That’s okay. Parenting therapy is often very effective even when children are not directly involved. Changes in how parents respond can lead to meaningful changes in the home environment.

Will I be told what I’m doing wrong as a parent?

No. Our approach is supportive and collaborative. We focus on building on your strengths, understanding patterns, and helping you feel more confident and equipped — not judged.

Will I learn strategies I can use at home?

Yes. Parenting therapy is practical and focused on real-life application. You’ll learn tools and approaches that you can begin using right away in your daily interactions.

How does trauma or stress affect my child’s behavior?

Stress and trauma can impact how children regulate emotions, communicate, and respond to situations. Parenting therapy helps you understand these patterns and respond in ways that support regulation, safety, and connection.

What happens during parenting sessions?

Sessions typically include understanding your current challenges and your family values, learning new strategies, problem-solving real-life situations, and practicing approaches you can use at home. You’ll leave with clear takeaways and next steps.

How long does parenting therapy last?

Some parents come in for a few 55-minute sessions to address a specific concern, while others continue longer for ongoing support. Many families benefit from short-term support (around 4–12 sessions), depending on their needs.

Can parenting therapy be combined with my child’s individual therapy?

Yes. Parenting therapy often works alongside individual therapy to create consistency and support across both home and treatment.

Can you help with real-life situations outside the office?

Yes. When appropriate, we may incorporate community-based support — such as practicing strategies in real-world settings or helping you navigate specific challenges as they happen.

Many children’s behaviors are shaped by stress or past experiences.
